Buyer Guide · MOQ

How to negotiate MOQ with Chinese suppliers by understanding what creates the minimum.

MOQ is often linked to production economics rather than a random sales number. Ask what constraint creates the minimum, then explore alternatives that change that constraint without pretending there is no cost.

Common reasons a supplier sets an MOQ

Different minimums can apply to the total order, each model, each colour, custom packaging, or specific components.

✓ Raw-material minimums

✓ Colour or finish batch sizes

✓ Printing or packaging setup

✓ Tooling and machine setup

✓ Minimum efficient production runs

✓ Supplier minimum order value

✓ Customization requirements

✓ Sub-supplier component minimums

Ask before negotiating

Which minimum are you actually trying to reduce?

Clarify whether the supplier means total order MOQ, per-SKU MOQ, per-colour MOQ, packaging MOQ, or a minimum imposed by a material or component supplier.

This question often reveals more room to restructure the order than simply repeating “Can you lower the MOQ?”

Practical negotiation options

Every option has a tradeoff. Make that tradeoff explicit instead of treating a lower minimum as free.

✓ Use standard packaging for the first order

✓ Reduce colour or model variants

✓ Accept a higher unit price for a smaller trial quantity

✓ Pay a setup or tooling charge separately where appropriate

✓ Start with an existing stock configuration before customization

✓ Ask whether production can be combined with another run

✓ Split the commercial commitment into staged orders only if the supplier can genuinely support it

Compare total impact

A lower MOQ can still be a worse deal.

Review unit price, tooling, packaging, sample cost, payment terms, lead time, and inventory risk together.

Keep it documented

Put the negotiated structure back into the quotation.

Do not rely on a chat promise. Ask the supplier to confirm the agreed quantity, price, configuration, packaging, timing, and other changed terms in writing.
